From the Warrior Expo: The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia

Hampton Roads & Central Virginia

The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia provides programs and services for military personnel in the area. The United Service Organizations (USO) were founded in response to a request from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt that on-leave recreation of the U.S. Armed Forces be handled by private organizaitons. Six agencies were created in response to this: Salvation Army, Young Men’s Christian Association, Young Women’s Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association, and the National Jewish Welfare Board, which coordinated their efforts to provide services that were not duplicated or overlooked. As a result, the USO center was born. The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia serves to enhance the quality of life of the U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families around the world. This helps create a symbiotic environment between the US military communities and supporting civilian communities.

While the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia was chartered by Congress in 1984, it is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that depends solely on corporate and individual support to fund its programs and services, as well as volunteers from its very supportive local network. They maintain strong sponsor relationships within the Hampton Roads and Central Virginia community. They have 11 centers throughout Virginia, with each center responsible for individual center programs, but some services include: emergency lodging, mobile outreach, orientation, information and referral, special holiday programs, summer concerts, military appreciation days, and Flightline canteens.

If you are a military member and family member of military personnel that need assistance or wish to participate in USO activities, they can find out their nearest USO center by calling 757-764-5232 or checking the website.
